Cat-a-strophe combines the popular arcade idle genre with a unique kitten babysitting concept, developed during the height of Stray's popularity to capitalize on cat-themed gaming trends. Players manage a kitten care facility with multiple specialized sections including milk feeding, toy play areas, and bathing stations.
The game challenges players to efficiently manage the needs of numerous kittens simultaneously, creating the perfect amount of controlled chaos. Each room progressively increases in complexity and visual fidelity, requiring strategic expansion and automation through purchasable assistants.
Developed as a solo project at Cassette LLC, the game explores the delicate balance between cute, chaotic kitten care and engaging idle mechanics. The core loop involves receiving kittens from humans, attending to their various needs across specialized sections, and successfully returning happy, cared-for kittens.
The project served as an extensive exploration of modular system architecture, utilizing interfaces and generic programming approaches to create scalable, maintainable code across multiple similar game sections while tackling the unique challenge of non-humanoid character animation.
